! The state legislature has passed landmark legislation, but Governor Hochul hasn't signed it and it might die. This would be a travesty. If you're in New York, visit https://eff.org/rtr to help tell the Governor that we can't afford to wait (and tell your friends in New York, too!).

@pluralistic Excellent thread! Works falling into the public domain don't get nearly as much attention as they should!

@pluralistic you'd do us all a huge favor on Mastodon if you refined your cross-posts so that they weren't constrained by Tsitter's arbitrary character limit.

This ain't Twitter. We are specifically NOT on Twitter in order to avoid things like this.

@pluralistic oh wow! So does this mean works about Holmes can now have him showing more emotions? Because I know that has actually been an issue in regards to the copyright of later works

Some exciting works leave copyright with the new year! https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/20/free-for-2023/#oy-canada

@pluralistic next year will be a big test if we can go all of 2023 without Disney trying to ruin it for everyone.

@pluralistic so many great works from 1927! @mmasnick and I are bringing back our public domain game jam for it's 5th year with "Gaming Like It's 1927"

https://itch.io/jam/gaming-like-its-1927

the logo for Gaming Like It's 1927, using the painting "The Secret Player" by René Magritte featuring ball players wandering through a surreal garden

@BetaCuck4Lyfe

Every post here is hand-posted and re-edited. There is no cross-posting.

As noted in my bio, I post long threads from this account and there are many ways to get my essays if you don't like my Mastodon style - RSS, newsletter, Medium, Tumblr, a blog, etc. I recommend unfollowing me here and subscribing to one of those if you prefer. Links at pluralistic.net.

@pluralistic Just a suggestion: I think a good idea for posting a long thread is to post the intro as public and make the subsequent posts unlisted.

@RMiddleton

You have misunderstood how "unlisting" works (unlisted toots are hidden only for nonfollowers on the same instance, not followers). I should probably add the direct link to https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2023/ as well. Awesome!

@pluralistic One of my favorite things about the new year is seeing what enters the public domain. Looks like there’s a lot of great stuff this time around!
