Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.
It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.
We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

@mastodonmigration are there any recommendations for creating additional mastodon servers? Specifically hardware?
If you just signed up on a big instance and it is slow, consider moving to a smaller instance.
If you have decent technical skills, you can even set up your own instance -- it is fairly easy to do so. You will be helping Mastodon cope with the influx of refugees from the fowlsite.

This is problematic unless you are aiming at to be like reddit, plus unite all the servers, do not diversify servers which only cause confusion, please do as I said and update, I am only stating this in favor of mastodon otherwise It will not grow as a main source

@mastodonmigration mstdn.ca got hit especially hard last wave :) went from 4500 ish users to over 27,000 in a very short time. There were hiccups and some down time... but we get it. :)

@mastodonmigration I just joined because Twitter suspended Mastodon account, I see potential in this Social Media and its app, I want a fair market where there are no monopoly and want Social Media that doesn’t tie to anything and doesn’t ban & take a way right of people that do the right thing. There are power in numbers and the universe always balances itself out where there are consequences for greeds and violence
I cannot imagine how many systems (on top of systems) you have running.
When I do work for some live TV charity, it feels like we are always chasing our tail finding bugs, glitches and ghosts in these systems.
Social media is a huge deal and so important to the community!

@mastodonmigration my go-to action when joining a server is to follow the host or the admin. Some servers even have a dedicated account to post news and maintenance information.

@mastodonmigration All of us, including all people who works volunterrly to develop the system, have to direct and promote the idea of a self hosted instance. This have to be the future of social network. We can't create another facebook or another twitter.
I'm strugling to find a good method to win the today's obstacles that obstruct people to create their own instance. They are dynamic ip and port 80 blocking.
I think the aim has to be a mastodon instance in each mobile or computer in the world, as it would be the initial philosophy of Internet: each one with their own "home page".
Soon, when ipv6 and 5G are fully implemented, the world will change, for better.

Certainly if #twitter continues along its current trajectory, mastodon will continue to grow. Twitter was flawed from the outset. The wider your circle grew the more antagonistic it became. The harder you fought to hold your ground. The federated landscape fractures that monopoly, both physically and psychologically.
